Bert to all - passed away peacefully at age 94 on November 11, 2013, Remembrance Day. The day is fitting as Bert served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW2 and was a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Masonic Lodge. He was a carpenter by trade, rising to be a superintendent (project manager) on many large construction projects, the most famous being Ontario Place. He was a construction man thru & thru. He was also an avid curler & card player & gardener. He grew up in the east of the City of Toronto. His war service was in remote British Columbia with his bride. After the war, he returned to the city and built his own home in Scarborough, where he started a family. Construction work took him away to several places in Ontario, including a two year stint in rural Cedar Springs. That led subsequently to buying a home in the Beaches where the family resided for many years. Later, with the kids grown up, they moved to a smaller home in East York and a much beloved cottage on Lake Couchiching. Upon retirement, Bert bought a condo in Orillia. He spent the last few years at Birchmere Retirement Home where he served as resident President and rule-breaker. His wife Sylvia Hocking passed away 27 years ago. Bert is survived by his daughter Joanne Elmer, son-in-law Dale Mann, son Brian Nancekivell, grandchildren Kathryn (Geoff), Jonathan, Allison (Shawn), Alex (Jeremy), Kelly and Brooke, and great-grandson Kiefer. Cremation has taken place. If desired, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Bert’s memory, and will be accepted by the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E. Orillia, (705) 326-3595. There will be a celebration of his life on November 23 at 2-4 PM at the Orillia Legion at 215 Mississauga, Orillia. (705-325-8422).
