Remembering John Francis Acton

Acton, John Francis born May 6, 1945 suddenly passed Wednesday October 28, 2026. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and a man who lived a whole lot of life and had the stories to prove it.

He was the beloved husband of Carolyn, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. He was a proud father to Kristin and her husband John, and Jamie and her husband Jeremy, and a doting grandfather to Ian, Teddy, Stella, Curtis, and Patrick, who knew him affectionately as Grampy.

John dedicated 50 plus years of his working life to Miller Paving, helping build roads throughout Northern Ontario and Canada. He took pride in his work and certainly wasn’t afraid of a challenge.

John was a natural storyteller, with a lifetime of experiences and a story for just about every occasion. He was stubborn, mischievous, and had the most beautiful smile. Whether you called him John, Johnny, JA, Big Daddy or Grampy, you knew exactly who you were talking about.

Retirement brought a new chapter and a different kind of adventure. He happily took on the role of neighbourhood watchdog, keeping an eye on things during his daily walks. He enjoyed getting out for a drive and, most importantly, making sure Nan got to all her classes and appointments. He loved watching action movies with Ian, time up North with Teddy, teasing-and razing Curtis, betting against Patrick on football and making sure he was there waiting to pick Stella from the bus . These everyday routines became some of the simple pleasures of his retirement years.

John leaves behind a lifetime of memories, countless stories, a family who loved him and a smile that will never be forgotten.

He will be deeply missed by his family, his fur babies Clark and Dolly and his best buddy Bobby, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.

A special thanks to the community of Gowganda, Vicki, Dave and crew and the OPP officers who bravely rescued John and his best buddy Gordy. As per John’s request cremation has taken place and further details to come for his celebration of life.

Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes L. Doolittle Chapel 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595.
