It is with deep sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Robert (Bob) Downard, 81, of Warminster, on May 15, 2026. Born on January 21, 1945 in Toronto, he was the son of George and Dorrian Downard.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Joy; his three daughters, Sandra (Jeffrey), Nadine, and Jan (Ryan); his grandchildren, Darius and Elden; and his brothers, Lenard (Roberta), Ken (Karen), and Skipper. He is predeceased by his brother Jim (Carol) and his sisters, Marge (Charlie), June (Russell) and Sue. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family and friends.
Bob will be remembered as the one who was always there for you, no matter what. Whether your boat engine wasn't working or you needed an extra set of feet to dance the night away, he was your guy.
Born in Toronto, he grew up in the Lakeview neighbourhood in Mississauga where he was the fourth of eight children. He trained to be a marine mechanic and was well known in the region for building and racing cars, boats and snowmobiles. He met Joy through working for her family and they were married in 1974.
When he wasn't tinkering around in Orillia, he was at his second home in Bobcaygeon with his friends and family, fishing, boating, and enjoying his life at the trailer.
One of his biggest accomplishments was in 1978, when during the Port Credit Tank Farm Fire he used his launch boat to release a tanker ship from the docks into Lake Ontario to prevent a possible explosion.
The family would like to thank all the healthcare workers who assisted caring for Bob. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honour to Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital or Spencer House, Orillia.
Cremation arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes L Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595.
