Remembering Mary Skalosky (nee Fakas)

Mary Skalosky (Fakas) September 18, 1932 – May 6, 2026

With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Skalosky on May 6, 2026, in her 94th year at Mariposa House Hospice in Orillia, Ontario. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, to Anelia and Dimitri Fakas, she was the beloved sister of Joan Fakas (predeceased). A devoted wife of 50 years to Taras Skalosky (predeceased), they had three children: Sandra Dawson, Tosh (Elaine) and Richard (JoAnn). An adored and admired Baba to nine grandchildren; Ashley Watkins (Matt), Georgia Vaughn (Taylor), Alexandra (Ryan), Tosh Jr. (Marnie), Sam (Kelsey), Hannah Cunnigham (Martin), Ellie (Arthur), Isla, Will; and great grandmother to Jude, Roman, Jack, August, Magnolia, Alice, Thomas, Georgia, Charlie and Jack and Aunt to Andrea Mariash and Max Pascho.

Mary was always ambitious, independent and high-achieving, a force to be reckoned with. Her work ethic drove her success, and she added value to everything she touched. These qualities were matched by her thoughtfulness and generosity to her family and friends. She excelled as the secretary to the president of Stelco in her early 20’s. This aided her confidence when she and her husband fearlessly took on ownership and operation of Delmonte in the Pines Resort in 1957. Together they hosted countless families over six decades. This created everlasting friendships and memories for those who were lucky enough to discover their little slice of heaven on Sparrow Lake. Those who worked for “Mrs. S” were naturally influenced and inspired by the high standards of the example she set. Throughout her long life, she enjoyed curling, playing bridge, cooking, knitting, and gardening. She enjoyed travelling with friends and family and was a devoted fan of her grandchildren’s endeavors. A superfan in the stands. In her later years she found great joy in the companionship of her beloved cat Ben. Her greatest joy and pride were her family. Her presence as the foundation of our family will be forever missed. She was an extraordinary woman. The family will be having a private gathering this summer. Please raise a glass of rye, “2 fingers”, to toast this amazing lady. If desired, memorial donations would be welcomed to Mariposa House Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes - L. Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia. (705) 326-3595.
