Remembering Franz Schuh

Franz Schuh (1938-2026)

We celebrate the life of Franz Schuh, who passed away in his 88th year on April 18, 2026, at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. He was a devoted family man with incredible strength of character, and will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Franz was born on January 7, 1938 in the former Yugoslavia and escaped to Germany with his family near the end of the Second World War. Following completion of a machinist apprenticeship, he moved to Canada to start a new life at the age of 18. Franz's love of soccer helped him quickly find community and integrate into his new country. After starting his career at Tip Top Tailor, he transitioned to a position in the experimental department at Massey Ferguson, where he was able to meld his natural creativity with his technical prowess for the first time. He spent many happy years as a machinist in the biomedical field, first at Toronto General Hospital and then landing his dream job at the University of Toronto. At U of T, he collaborated with many students and professors in the Biomedical Engineering department, designing and machining pieces that made a difference in advancing medical research. He felt fortunate to be able to work on projects he was passionate about and took great pride in his work and the role he played in helping others succeed.

Franz loved a good conversation and a joke, always lighting up at get togethers with family and friends. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, spending endless hours working on the family cottage and in his garden, admiring trees and wildlife along the way. Franz also spent many hours pursuing his artistic talents in woodcarving and woodworking.

Franz will be dearly missed and remembered by his wife Eileen, daughters Tanya (Amanda) and Heidi (Erik), grandchildren Rowan, Evan and Sara (Jasper), sister Eva, brother Toni and his many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He joins his parents Georg and Barbara, brothers Joe, Peter and Georg, sister Anna and other loved ones in eternal rest.
