Boswell (Bawus), Lorraine
April 2, 1936 – February 6, 2026
Lorraine passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness at Mariposa House Hospice in Orillia on February 6, 2026. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known to all as “Baba.”
She was born on April 2, 1936, in Carvel, Alberta, to Rose and Michael Bawus. Lorraine was the devoted wife for 65 years to the late Robert William Boswell (May 13, 1930 – March 11, 2025) of Toronto, Ontario. She was a proud and caring mother to Susan Anderson (Peter) and Robert Boswell (Suzanne). She was an especially proud and loving grandmother to Ellen Denny (Karl), Curtis Boswell (Andy), Caroline Anderson-Proudfoot (Ross), Amy Boswell, and Marc Anderson (Olivia), and a devoted and adoring great-grandmother to Marek and Parker Denny and Halle Proudfoot. Sister to the late Gloria Lubka (late Bill) of Toronto and late brother Jerry Bawus of Carvel, Alberta. She was a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews and a beloved cousin to family across Ontario and Alberta.
Lorraine and Bob raised their family in Burlington, Ontario, before spending their retirement years between the cottage they built on Steenburg Lake near Bancroft, Ontario, and Port Charlotte, Florida. Together they shared a love of travel, cruising the Caribbean and exploring destinations throughout the United States, including Alaska, as well as Europe, Russia, and nearly every province in Canada.
A woman of many talents, Lorraine spent her retirement years knitting hundreds of pairs of mittens, all generously donated to charities in Bancroft, Bobcaygeon, and Orillia. She also loved sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, and embroidery, and was well known for her homemade cabbage rolls and freshly baked bread.
Lorraine’s talents extended well beyond crafts. She won bowling tournaments, played on her high school basketball team in a charity fundraising game against the Harlem Globetrotters in the early 1950s, and was a constant presence on the sidelines—cheering on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer games. She also attended dance recitals, skating carnivals and graduations.
Her career spanned many years in administration and personnel. One of her proudest accomplishments was being trained on the then-new “Teletype” machine and becoming the
first person to send overseas communication from Canada while employed by Canadian National Railways.
While we are deeply saddened to say goodbye to our beloved matriarch, known to all as “Baba,” we find comfort in our memories and in the lasting legacy she leaves in our hearts.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the team at Leacock Retirement Lodge and to Kelly Kennedy for their compassionate support during the past few weeks. Lorraine loved her time at Leacock and the people who worked there. We also offer our deepest gratitude to Mariposa House Hospice for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Lorraine and her family in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorraine’s memory to Mariposa House Hospice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
