Remembering Betty Louise Ligers (nee Sissons)

Betty Louise Ligers, born March 6, 1943, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, at the age of 82. The eldest daughter of William and Hazel Sissons, Betty was predeceased by her brother Bill Sissons (Jan) and is survived by her sister Pat Manzer. She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of more than 60 years, Juris Ligers Sr., her children Juris (Lisa) and Kristen (David), and her cherished grandchildren Sam, Marlee, Will, and Mia.

From an early age, Betty’s love for learning shone brightly. She excelled academically and proudly became the first in her family to graduate from university. For over 27 years, Betty inspired countless young minds as a beloved teacher in the Orillia and Niagara areas, often returning home with stories of the hilarious antics of her primary students. After retiring at 55, Betty embraced life with enthusiasm—walking and biking local trails, tending her garden, reading, and spending treasured time with her children and grandchildren.

A lifelong learner, Betty explored new passions through classes in folk art painting, fitness, mixology, knitting, Spanish, cooking, sewing, computers, scrapbooking, wine tasting, and more. Her curiosity extended to family history, tracing her father’s roots back to 17th-century Yorkshire, England. Betty’s love of travel brought adventure with family and friends, creating memories across North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Above all, Betty’s greatest joy was being “Grammy.” She delighted in walking her grandchildren to school, volunteering for field trips, cheering at hockey, lacrosse, and soccer games, and celebrating piano recitals, gymnastics meets, and dance competitions. Known for her quick wit and love of a good pun, Betty was often the last one dancing at weddings, radiating joy and laughter.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Carson Funeral Homes L. Doolittle Chapel on Thursday February 19, 2026 from 7-9 P.M. and on Friday February 20, 2026 from 10 A.M. until time of service at 11 A.M. A reception will follow the service in the funeral home.

Betty’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Trillium Manor, who became like friends over the past five years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada https://www.parkinson.ca/get-involved/

I am sending so much love to Kristen, Juris, Mr Ligers and family. Betty made your home such a welcoming one (so much so that my sister Wendy spent at least half of her school life there!). She was always quick with a smile. Her kindness lit up a room. She will be very missed and forever in your hearts and memories. ❤️
