Remembering Donald James Wilkie

Don Wilkie passed away September 22, 2025, at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital in Orillia, Ontario, at the age of 81. He left us as he lived — steadfast, and on his own terms.

A proud veteran, Don served in the Royal Canadian Navy, and often reflected of his time aboard HMCS Bonaventure, in particular. His service was as much of a part of his identity as the Canadian flag that adorned any vehicle he drove.

As a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Don remained an active member of Branch #34, where he offered support and valued camaraderie.

A lifelong resident of Orillia, Don built a quiet life rooted in routine, resilience, and a strong sense of personal freedom. In his later years Don was a familiar sight around town in his electric wheelchair, Canadian flag fluttering behind him. 

He was a son, a brother, a father and a grandfather. He will be remembered for his strong personality, fierce independence, and for always being unapologetically himself.

Sincere thanks to those who supported Don in recent years, including Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Bayshore Healthcare, Ontario Health at Home, Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, Metagas, The Royal Canadian Legion, the neighbours at Legion Crest Complex, and the many nurses and PSWs who treated him with care and respect.

A Legion Tribute Service will be held October 26th from 2-3 at the Orillia Royal Canadian Legion Branch #34.  

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
