September 24, 1940 – June 21, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James "Jim" McConnell Duff, who peacefully departed this world on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born in Aviemore, Scotland, on September 24, 1940, Jim immigrated to Canada at a young age with his late parents, John (Jock) and Jeannie, and surviving siblings - Betty, John, and Margaret.
Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gail, and his four children: Scott, Greg, Laura, and Blair, as well as his daughters-in-law, Kim and Deanna.
He was a proud and devoted grandfather to eleven grandchildren: Amber, Victoria, Connor, Caitlyn, Allana, Emily, Jack, Sarah, Sean, William, and Gavin.
Jim earned his PhD in chemistry and built a long and respected career as a professional chemist. He held multiple patents in his field and was known for his intellect, precision, and dedication to innovation and discovery.
He loved the outdoors and spent countless hours supporting his family’s passions — whether coaching hockey and baseball or simply showing up with steady guidance and quiet encouragement. A passionate gardener, he found joy in tending his vegetable garden each year, sharing his harvest with friends and family. One of his favourite places to be was at the farm, where countless and lasting family memories were made across generations.
A traditional Scottish wake to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes L. Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595.
Condolences
