Remembering Elaine Sweenie (nee Binkley) 'Elaine'

Sweenie, Elaine (nee Binkley) June 14, 2025

On June 14th, after a lengthy illness, Elaine passed away peacefully at the cottage, the place she loved most. Born in 1944 in New Liskeard to Claire Binkley and Vin Gignac, she moved with her family to Midland at the age of eight and later graduated from the University of Toronto.

Elaine began her teaching career at Penetanguishene Secondary School and later taught at King Collegiate in Scarborough. In 1971, she married Bill, and together they raised two daughters, Jeanette Parker (Bruce) and Joanne Sweenie (Kirk Harrald). She was a devoted and proud grandmother to her two beloved grandsons, Robbie and Morgan.

In her youth, Elaine was an avid badminton player, and throughout her life, she remained creative — quilting beautiful pieces, making jewelry, and generously sharing her talents. She was an excellent hostess who made everyone feel at home and was always there to lend a hand, putting others before herself in everything she did.

In 1999, Elaine and Bill retired to Orillia while continuing to spend the summer months at their cottage on Farlain Lake near Penetanguishene — a place full of wonderful memories with family and friends.

In keeping with Elaine’s wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are entrusted to Carson Funeral Home, J.H. Lynn Chapel 290 First Street Midland. (705-526-6551). Online condolences and memories may be left at www.carsonfuneralhomes.com
