August 5, 1943 – May 24, 2025
With great love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Grant Douglas Coones, affectionately known to many as “Mr. Christie” and “Uncle Grant.” Grant passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on May 24, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on August 5, 1943, to Dorothy and Lauren Coones, he was a beloved brother to the late Alvin Coones and Alta Van Andel.
Grant shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Coones (née Payne), a partnership filled with unwavering love, laughter, and deep companionship. He was a devoted father to Sandra Coones and Kelly Coones (Stephen Pidhirny), and a proud grandfather to Zachary Quesnelle (Madison Lebrun), all of whom he cherished with his whole heart.
A true people person, Grant had the rare gift of making anyone feel at home. With his big smile, easy conversation, and kind heart, he built a wide circle of lasting friendships throughout his life. He always had time for others, and his presence lit up every room he entered.
Grant was also the heart of every family gathering—the king of the dad joke, a gifted singer and guitar player, and the joyful leader of countless singsongs. Whether it was American Pie or Me and Bobby McGee, his voice and music brought everyone together, leaving behind melodies as unforgettable as his spirit.
He had a deep love for the outdoors and a zest for adventure. Grant spent many joyful days fishing, hunting, golfing, skeet shooting, camping, canoeing, and riding horses with his daughters. He was especially passionate about whitewater canoeing, often sharing stories of the river with enthusiasm and pride. A talented fiddle player and lifelong hockey fan, Grant lived fully, laughed often, and loved deeply.
Above all, Grant will be remembered for the way he made people feel—welcomed, uplifted, and loved. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Bayshore Nurses, Ontario Health at Home, and Erin Bowser of Lakeside Optometry for their kindness and care. Special gratitude also goes to Joanne Matte, Dr. Bedard, Dr. Butler and team, Gilles Miron, and the compassionate staff at Princess Margaret Hospital for their dedicated support throughout Grant’s journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Grant’s memory may be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or the Canadian Cancer Society.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when available.

Sep 7, 2025Dear Joan, Sandra, Kellie and family, I was so sorry to read of Grant's passing...Although we have not seen each other in a while, please know that Rob and I will keep you in our hearts and prayers. I rember Grant stopping by the store in bring in crackers or a new cookie for Joan and I to snack on in the afternoon. He always had a smile and a cheerful bit of news to share, perhaps a topic he had heard on the cbc while travelling. Gentle hugs to you...Bev. and Rob.
