Remembering Joseph Donald O'Connor 'Doc'

Don O’Connor, 72, passed away on February 15th in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario, after a courageous battle with leukemia. His strength and resilience in the face of such challenges were truly inspiring, and he faced each day with a smile. Despite the hardships, Don remained a hero, holding strong until the very end.

Don’s early years were spent in Low, Quebec, where he grew up on a farm and worked in the family general store. He later found his true calling with the Ontario Provincial Police, where he dedicated more than 30 years of his life to serving others. His passion for policing didn’t end with his retirement; Don continued to serve in various roles, including a UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti with the RCMP, the OPP recruitment unit, and conducting polygraphs and investigations. His love for law enforcement was passed down to his two sons, both of whom followed in his footsteps.

Throughout his career, Don became a legend within the OPP, earning the respect of both uniformed officers and civilian staff. Though his exterior might have seemed tough, those who knew him understood that he had one of the biggest hearts. He cared deeply for others and showed this in everything he did.

While Don’s career in policing was a significant part of his life, his family always came first. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, frequently expressing his love and support. He could always be found cheering them on at various events—hockey, ringette, soccer, lacrosse, gymnastics, and dance.

Don leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Cathy O'Connor, children Matthew O'Connor (Kandice), Sean O'Connor (Sonia), and Shannon O'Connor (Mitch), as well as his predeceased daughter Erin O'Connor. He was also a proud grandfather to Kalleigh, Darcy, Owen, Drew, and another granddaughter on the way. Don will be deeply missed by his many friends, siblings, and extended family.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Maze from Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. Dimaria and Dr. Sanders, and his favorite nurse, Taylor, from the Barrie RVH Cancer Centre. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sochaniwsky for his unwavering support from the very beginning.

Don will always be remembered for his infectious laughter, his unwavering love for his family, and his sense of humor, which remained intact until his final days. One of his last memorable phrases was, "Let’s get this show on the road."

A celebration of life will be held at Carson Funeral Home on Thursday March 6th, 2025 1-4pm. Located at 54 Coldwater Street East Orillia- 705-326-3595. Sharing of memories will take place at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society and OPP Youth Foundation.

  2. George Tyo

My deepest condolences to Cathy and family. Doc and I met through Lodestar close to 10 years ago. Although we never worked together with the O.P.P., we shared mutual friends and colleagues and spent many hours reminiscing about the “old days”. I will never forget his passion for work and family and he was a great role model for his successors. Until the next time we meet, I’ll continue to keep the faith, my friend.

  3. Bryn Thom

Growing up, I have many fond memories of my Uncle Donny, who was truly a remarkable and compassionate individual. I hold him and his family close in my thoughts today and always.

  4. Rob P.

Rest in peace, Don. No matter how many times you called with your caller ID blocked, I always knew it was you—and I always looked forward to our conversations. Your kindness, humor, and friendship meant so much to me, and I will truly miss you. Though it’s heartbreaking to say goodbye, I take comfort in knowing you are at peace and no longer suffering. Having lost family in the past six months, I understand the pain of loss, but I’ve also learned that, with time, we find ways to cope while keeping their memory alive. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and loved ones during this difficult time. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten

  9. Anne and David Ezekiel

It is with heavy hearts that Anne and I say goodbye to a very good friend and colleague. Doc was a beloved member of the Lodestar team and since 2013 when Anne and I first me Doc, we have nothing but fond memories of him. He had so many great stories to tell about his many exploits with the OPP where he served with honour and distinction for over 30 years. He was above everything else, an old school cop, a consummate professional and a really good guy. I know his second career with Lodestar was also filled with many good times and he really loved the camaraderie, bugging the young guys and affectionately giving them all nicknames like Linus and the Young Lads. I know that Doc was very happy at Lodestar, he loved doing investigations, conducting surveillance and being on the road doing spins with his trusted partner George Cousens. To Cathy and all the O'Connor family our deepest and heartfelt condolences on your loss. Rest easy Doc Anne and David Ezekiel Ottawa

  11. Mike Harrington

To Cathy, all of Don's children, their spouses, and Don's grandchildren: please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your Patriarch, Don. Although I did not know Don well on a personal level, I was very aware of the respect that he commanded from all of his peers in the police community and from those who knew him well. I know that Don was a very committed family man and put the needs and interests of his family above his own. Don dedicated many years of his life to serving the people of Ontario, Canada, and abroad as a police officer of the highest calibre, and is owed a large debt of gratitude for his faithful and unwavering service. Don was man of high integrity and character. He will be missed by most everyone who knew him. Although I will not be able to attend the service celebrating his life, I will have Cathy and Don's family in my thoughts. Don's life, his contributions to his community and his character is well worthy of a celebration for a life well and fully lived.

I spent a lot of time as a kid playing at Don's house (I was good friends with his son, Sean). Whether it was swimming in the pool, family dinners, or driving to hockey games, Don always treated me well and made me feel completely welcome. He had a big heart, and you could tell he was the kind of guy who wanted to see his kids happy and successful. He will be missed! Thanks for the happy childhood memories, Don.

  14. Noelle Lawson

My heart hurts to hear that Doc has passed on. It was wonderful working with him years ago because he always made me feel like I was a part of the team. It didn’t matter if you were uniform or civilian, he always had time for you. I remember many times when he had us laughing so hard that our sides would burst. He came into my office one day with a long face and he told me that the doctor diagnosed him with CRS. Concerned I asked him, what’s that? He said, Can’t Remember Stuff! And that instantly made him one of my favourite people in OPP! I will miss catching up with you over coffee in the Caf, Doc. My deepest condolences to his family. Noelle Lawson

  35. Rachel Adams

Cathy, Shan, Sean & Matt - I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot think of my beautiful friend Shannon and her amazing family without thinking of her amazing Dad, Don. Shannon is one of the most positive, hardworking, bright lights in so many of our lives and I know so much of that came from the values, habits and beliefs instilled by Don. In our first year at Queen's, I remember Shannon telling us about her Dad, who could run lie detector tests, had worked in Haiti, spoke fluent French, was a police officer and I truly didn't think he could be any cooler :) . Don will be so missed, but the beautiful O'Connor family is a testament to his tremendous character and strong spirit, which will continue always. The biggest hugs and love to you all.
