Remembering Susan Lynn Turner (nee Filman)

June 29, 1961-November 6, 2024

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Turner Family announce the sudden passing of Susan Lynn Turner (nee Filman), peacefully at her home in Orillia, Ontario on November 6, 2024.

Susan is survived by her beloved husband and best friend of 40 years, Terry. She is deeply missed by her three children, Sean (Brittany), Darcy, and Carly (Drew). Ever-loving Nonnie to her three grandchildren, Colson, Wyatt, and Eloise. Devoted sister to Diane and Linda. Auntie to her nieces and nephews. Susan’s greatest joy was her many friends and family.

Susan was born in Hamilton, Ontario to William Filman and Nancy Dawson. She attended Central High School, as well as Lord Elgin High School in Burlington, Ontario and was a member of the Burlington Teen Tour Band. Susan went on to attend York University where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Bachelor of Social Work, all while raising a young family. Susan dedicated 25 years of her working life to the Children’s Aid Society.

It was in the Fall of 2000 that Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Susan, the always strong and sometimes stubborn individual, fought hard and won the battle against her diagnosis. She was an active supporter and champion of the Terry Fox Foundation.

Susan was a warm, caring, and tender soul. She listened intently, offered support, and lived a life full of love. She made sure others were taken care of before herself, right up to her passing. Her legacy will be felt and remembered.

A celebration of Susan’s life will take place on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Hawk Ridge Golf Club from 1pm to 4pm, with acknowledgments at 2pm.

Donations in memory of Susan’s life would be welcomed by the Terry Fox Foundation.

Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes L. Doolittle Chapel 54 Coldwater St. E Orillia (705)326-3595.

I was Susan’s colleague for 15 years at the Children’s Aid Society. Although we worked in different offices, Susan was always quick to smile and say hello; and was always approachable when we discussed any shared family situations. She worked with an open and caring heart. I wish her family and loved ones peace and comfort at this very difficult time…

We are heartbroken over the loss of our cousin, Susan. She was so many things to so many people… it is hard to imagine how vast the void she has left. For me, Susan will be remembered most by her positivity, her witty sense of humour and her compassion. Susan was a person who would not think twice to offer help and support to another. Her loss has humbled me.

  10. Sylvia and Ron Fox

Dear Terry and Family, There are no words to describe how sorry we are for your loss or how hard this must be for all of you. Susan was a wonderful woman with such a giving heart and she made the lives of everyone she knew that much better. We loved her sense of humour. This may sound silly, and I even told her the same thing once, but I think of her EVERY time I use the sewing maching I bought from her. It is so much better than the one I had so I am always thrilled to use it. Susan will truly be missed. Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of a life well lived. Fondly, Sylvia and Ron

  25. Shirley Harper

Terry and family, I’m so sorry and sad to hear of Sue’s passing. Through our years together at Children’s Aid, Sue was a trusted and valued friend. Kind, considerate, funny, and always common sense amidst chaos. She and I supported one another through our cancer diagnosis, and somehow we would always find something to laugh about…often our baldness. When work took me to Orillia, and Sue was out of office, she invited and encouraged me to use her desk. It was a standing joke that I would move her things around for her. Since retirement, our contact was primarily via internet where we could share a joke or support one another through challenging times. She was an extraordinary person, loved by all who knew her, amd her presence will be deeply missed. As you navigate these dark days, I hope you will find peace in the many beautiful memories made with Sue Rest easy my friend.

  27. Jennifer Graham

On behalf of the Graham Family we are all shocked and upset to hear of Susan's sudden passing. It meant a lot when Sue took the time to bring Bill to Campbellford for a visit a couple of years ago. Sue was very supportive to our family when life became haywire earlier this year. Again, she took the time to reach out. My Mom especially felt the sincerity in Sue's friendship; just so nice she enjoyed keeping in touch. Such a gift to have such an open heart full of so much love. We feel your loss and send our heartfelt sympathies and love to all of Sue's family and friends from our family.

  28. LUCAS KENT

We are so sorry for your sudden loss and are praying for you and your family.

  29. Deb and Dan Peacock

Two of my dearest friends, Diane and Linda, have lost their sister for too soon. Although I didn’t have the fortune of knowing Susan well, yet had a few opportunities to enjoy girls nights with her, she was equally as kind and precious as Diane and Linda. Her smile and laugh was filled with grace. To my friends your bond as sisters is precious and will never leave you. May you hold her memories close to your hearts and one day be at peace with her passing. To Terry, Sean, Darcy and Carly our deepest condolence.

  30. Karl Mackenzie , and Pam

I know there aren’t any words that could possibly ease anyones pain of loss, because this lady was beyond special and you could feel it in her presence. There are very few people that have the ability to touch your heart in an instant like she could. You knew and felt that she was genuine at heart and soul. You will truly be missed and always remembered.
