Remembering Herbert Clayton Clements

It is with great sadness that the family of Herb Clements announce his death at Hospice Simcoe on May 5th, 2023 at the age of 71. Herb passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Midland, Ontario on September 20th, 1951 he was the eldest son of the late Harold and Jessie Clements. Herb is survived by his wife of 51 years Susan of Hillsdale, Ontario, his daughter, Julie (Jim) of Barrie, Ontario and son Mike of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is also survived by grandchildren, Ethan, Kelsey, Jackson, and brother Neil. In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by his sister Nancy. Upon graduation of High School Herb began his distinguished career of public service by joining Her Majesty’s Royal Navy stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon completion of his Naval service, Herb joined the Ambulance Service in Midland, Ontario and started a family with his high school sweetheart Susan. Soon after, Herb joined York Ambulance in Vaughn and also volunteered with the local Fire Department. After a brief stay in Alliston, Herb and family settled in Orillia, Ontario where Herb joined the Provincial Ambulance Service all the while volunteering with the Orillia (Severn) Township Volunteer Fire Department on evenings and weekends. A change of pace for Herb resulted in joining the Office of the Fire Marshall and a move to Chatham Ontario where he and Susan made new friends and had new adventures on their motorcycle. After 10 years with the OFM, Herb missed the camaraderie of the fire hall and chose to finish his career with the Springwater Township Fire Service as Deputy Chief. Herb was always there for family and friends with a helping hand - from building barns with his friend Harvey to responding to house fires from the dinner table, Herb always lead by example and will be missed terribly by everyone that he touched over the years. From close friends on Avery Lane in Marchmont and Bass Lake Woodlands, Ontario to Umatilla, Florida. Herb will be remembered for his amazing capacity to remember the smallest detail no matter how long ago; great sense of humour; his unwavering dedication to his community through his years working in Emergency Services and being a loving husband, father and friend. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to ALS Canada or Hospice Simcoe. A special thanks to the staff at the Specialized Seniors Care Unit at RVH in Barrie and Hospice Simcoe.
