Remembering Allan Emond

(1926-2022)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Emond in Orillia on August 12th in his 97th year. Allan is survived by Olive, his wife of 73 years, sons David (Brenda), Douglas, and Steven (Maureen), grandchildren Matthew, Patrick, Caitlin (Jared Forbes) and Jennifer, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his five brothers and two sisters.

“Al” as he was known to his family and friends, was born on February 25th 1926 in Toronto, the eighth and final child of Alexander and Lillian Emond. Although times were tough growing up during the Depression, Al recalled having had a happy childhood. In 1943, at age 17, he enlisted in the RCAF. He trained as a flight engineer but the war ended before he was called to serve overseas. Allan met Olive Jamieson, the love of his life, in 1945 and they married on November 5th 1948.

In 1946 he joined Consumers Gas Company where he remained until his retirement in 1986. His career with Consumers took him from fitter’s helper in Toronto to Niagara Region district manager in St. Catharines with stops along the way in Lindsay, Peterborough and Niagara Falls.

Throughout his career, Al was an active member of the Rotary Club and later the Golden K Club (now the Champlain Seniors). His volunteer activities included Chairman of the Sea Cadets in Peterborough, President of the Thorold Chamber of Commerce and board member of the Niagara Falls Concert Association.

Al and Olive enjoyed the company of a large group of friends, who met regularly over the years to golf and play bridge. They also had a great love of travel, visiting at least fifty countries over their lifetime.

Al’s final years were spent with Olive in the Leacock Retirement Lodge and more recently in the Leacock Care Centre in Orillia. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Carson Funeral Homes – L. Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E Orillia (705) 326-3595
