Remembering Catherine Margaret Bullen

We are saddened to announce the passing of Catherine Margaret Bullen, nee Bates, on July 20, 2022.

Beloved wife of Fayne Bullen, and of James Lochead and Steve Serenyi, both predeceased. Devoted and much loved mother of Anne Cook (Ken) and Bob Lochead (Selina) and adoring Grandma to Christopher Cook (predeceased), Lauren Trimi (Klodi), Caitlin Pace (Nathaniel), Alena Cook, and Nicola Lochead (Tom) Predeceased by her parents, Ada and Angus Bates and her 6 older siblings, Bill, Dorothy, Betty, Jim, Tom, and Bob.

Born in Grand Valley on April 18, 1932, Catherine grew up on the family farm in Amaranth Township. At the age of 12 she was sent to live with her Aunt Mable in Shelburne, so that she could attend high school. She went on to attend university in Guelph (then called Macdonald Hall) and kept in close contact with the class of ’53 for decades after graduation.

As a teacher, Catherine was fully committed to her students. She truly enjoyed teaching Home Economics, and passed on much of her knowledge to her children and grandchildren.

She chose early retirement when she was in her late 40s and spent much of the next 35 years travelling the world, first with Steve, and then with Fayne. She spent time in many countries including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Indonesia, Guatemala, England, and Grenada. So many adventures in one lifetime! Besides travel, she was passionate about cooking and gardening, and of course, family. We all have so many great memories of get togethers and reunions with fabulous food and lots of love.

Although she faced challenges and loss, her life was predominately a full and happy one. The last 10 years however, were not easy ones, as she struggled with the progression of Alzheimer’s. But even as the disease advanced and took a greater hold on her, we still often saw glimpses of her lovely self shining through.

Her sparkling eyes and warm smile will forever remain in our hearts.

We love you so much, Catherine, Mom, Grandma.

There will be a celebration of Catherine’s life on August 7th from 2to 4 at Carson’s Funeral Home, 54 Coldwater Rd., Orillia (705) 326-3595. Shared memories at 3.

If desired, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
