Remembering William Frederic Burtch

Passed away at the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital on Monday September 13, 2021 at the age of 81. William Burtch of Coldwater, loving father of Kevin (Susan) and Kelly Murphy (Brad). Cherished grandfather of Kenney (Katie), Austin, Marshall, Alexandra (Jordan) and Ryan. Beloved son of the late Harriett Jean and William James Burtch. William was born 8th of 9 children and is survived by his sister Helen Burtch, by his brother Wayne Burtch and his brother-in-law Wayne Donnelly. Predeceased by his brother Beverly Burtch and sisters Dolores Breen, Florine McLean, Joan McArthur, Carol Antonia and Donna Reekie. Uncle Billy will be sadly missed by more than 20 nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by his ex-wife Gail LaBerge and the entire Dobson family along with many friends and old hockey buddies.

Many who knew him said Bill was one of the best athletes in Orillia. He began playing minor hockey then was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs during his Jr.C career with the Orillia Bulldozers. Later he spent many years playing with the Orillia Oldtimers travelling to international tournaments in Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, England, France and Arizona, to name but a few. His daughter, Kelly, was once told that Bill could skate on glass and never leave a mark. He was also considered an exceptional baseball player.

Bill passed on his love of all sports and especially fishing to all of his grandchildren. He loved being outdoors whether for work or play and enjoyed gardening so much that the nickname “The Garden Gnome” was bestowed upon him many years ago. His grandchildren have yet to embrace Bill’s enjoyment of shovelling snow.

There will be many a Rye & Ginger raised in honour of Bill this week. Don’t forget to enjoy a hearty bowl of ice cream too... Bill would!

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service. If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595.
