Remembering Betty Mae Thomson

August 12, 1931 - January 17, 2020

Betty passed away at Orchard Villa Long Term Care in Pickering, Ontario at 88 years of age. Betty is survived by Bill, her devoted husband of 65 years, son Michael (Kelly), their 2 children, Sarah and Andrew and her daughter Nancy Tomkinson (Rick, stepson Rob). Betty was born and raised in Orillia, Ontario, the much-loved daughter of her late parents, Roy and Emily Payne. Pre-deceased by sister Mildred Smith (Jack) and brother Clary Payne (Louise). Survived by sisters Doris Faux (Allan) and Fern Gilchrist (Stan). Aunt to 7 nieces and nephews. A graduate of Central Elementary School and ODCVI, Betty worked at the Bank of Montreal and was one of the original employees of Huronia Trust where she excelled in her job as Personal Banking Manager. She retired August 28, 1992 to “be a Grandmother”. In addition to her role as Nana, she volunteered at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Meals On Wheels, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Betty’s favourite activity was walking. She and Bill could be seen almost daily on the Lightfoot Trail. In their retirement years Betty and Bill spent their winters in Lake Wales, Florida. Betty suffered from a particularly slow progressing form of Alzheimer’s disease. The last 7 years of her life were spent at Orchard Villa where she was visited daily by Bill and received good care from the conscientious Nurses and PSW’s. For those who wish, donations to The Alzheimer’s Society would be much appreciated. Services will be held at The Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St E, Orillia, (705) 326-3595. Visitation beginning at 10:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:30 am on Thursday January 23, 2020.
