Remembering Reta Ilene Burrows

At the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital on Monday February 2, 2015 in her 90th year. Reta is survived by her children, Stephen (Barbara), Janice Owen, Mark (Karen O’Coin) and her sibling, Norman Roe (Marjorie). She is preceded in death by her husband, Ed, brothers, Richard, Orval, and sister Elsie. Sorrowfully missed by her grandchildren, Tracey (Dave) Michael, Lisa (Paul) Avery, Michelle and Corey (Amanda) Burrows, Mallory and David Owen. Reta enjoyed being a great-grandmother to Zachary, Samuel and Oliver Avery, Caitlyn and Nathan Michael, and Ellie Burrows. She also enjoyed being “Gran” to Jordan (Kirsten) O’Coin and Lynsea O’Coin along with her children, Avery, Coulson and Calem. Reta was born on May 13, 1925 at home in Oro Township to Richard and Laura Roe (Shelswell). She completed her nursing training at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, class of 1946, and her Bachelor of Science of Nursing at the University of Western Ontario class of 1970. Reta had a varied career working at Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital and later as a Public Health Nurse in London Ontario, finishing her career as head of the Employee Health Department at Public General Hospital in Chatham, Ontario. Reta and Ed married in 1950 and lived in Windsor, where Steve was born, Kingston, where Jan was born, and Chatham, where Mark was born, along with stints in Newcastle, New Brunswick, Sudbury, Aldershot, and London, Ontario, while Ed pursued his professional engineering career. They settled in Orillia in 1982 and enjoyed a long, rewarding retirement filled with travel and involvement in community activities. Reta was an avid bridge player and thirty year volunteer reader for the Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour. A spring Celebration of Life will be held in Reta’s memory, date and place to be determined.
