Remembering Alfred Charles Roberts

February 28, 1931-April 23, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Charles Roberts, age 93, on April 23, 2024 in hospital after a brief illness. He was a loving husband to his wife of almost 70 years Sylvia Dorothy Roberts.

He was predeceased in death by his father Alfred Harold, his mother Gladys Elizabeth and his sister June Elizabeth Mills. He is survived by his wife Sylvia, two sons Paul (Cecilia Marie) and Alan (Paula), three daughters Julie (Lou), Tracey (Randy) and Debbie (Tom), eleven grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, Tyler, Shannon, Derek, Alex, Stephen, Erin, Ryan, Evan and Dylan and three great grandchildren Rhys, Sophie and Abigail.

Alfred was born in Islington, England where he was educated as an architect. He emigrated to western Canada in 1966 and settled in the greater Toronto area in 1971. As a principal partner of Zeidler Roberts Architects, he collaborated on various iconic building structures, such as McMaster Health Sciences Centre in Hamilton, Queen's Quay Terminal, Toronto, Ontario Place and Toronto Eaton Centre. He was President of the Ontario Architects Association in 1983. He was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 1985 and served as its President from 1988-1989.

Upon retirement at age 57, he enjoyed many happy years travelling and cruising the world with Sylvia. He will be forever remembered for his humour, incredible memory and his wealth of knowledge about England.

A private celebration of life to honour Alfred will be held in May following cremation at Carson Funeral Homes, Orillia, Ontario.

We just wanted Sylvia and the family to know how much we enjoyed chatting with Alf and providing them with our service. All the ladies were sad to hear of his pass. We pray for healing and understanding at this difficult time. Blessings - Ingrid and the House Fairies --- Emily, Hailey, Amber and Scarlet.

I'm very sadened to hear of Alfred's passing. I've only been able to know him for the past year but our interactions were always professional and educational. His intelligence and knowledge of building architecture and infrastructure systems was usually a topic of our discussions. He would always challenge my knowledge in a playful way, which I will miss. My deepest sympathy to the Roberts family.
