Remembering Nora Jane Murray

Nora Jane Murray (née Morrison)

August 1, 1932 – December 24, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nora Murray on her favourite holiday, December 24^th, 2016 at Hillcrest Village, Midland, Ontario, with her husband, son, and daughter at her side.

Beloved wife of Donald for 57 years, loving and cherished mother of Peter (Nora) and Susan, proud Nana of Christopher and Michael, dearest sister of Ronald (Marg), Donald (Isabel), Wayne (Bonnie), the late Carl (the late Peggy), and loving daughter of the late Lewis and Louise Morrison (Bernard).

Born in North Devon, New Brunswick, graduating from Fredericton High School, she worked for the Fish and Wildlife Branch of the New Brunswick government, and was active with the CGIT and YWCA in what was to become a lifelong involvement with volunteerism. She met her beloved Don in 1957 on a blind date, and was married in June of 1959. Soon after, the Murrays moved to Sarnia, Ontario, where before having her children, Nora worked briefly for St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and loved the beaches of Lake Huron. Nora was a Brownie leader, and a member of the women’s group at Grace United Church, joining in the welcoming of Vietnamese refugees in the late seventies. A terrific cook, she was well known for entertaining her bridge club, friends and family. The Murrays moved to France for two years in the mid-seventies, where Nora took up skiing, traveled the continent, acquired new cooking skills, and learned to speak French fluently.

In 1987, Nora and Don moved into their dream home in Corunna, near Sarnia, where Nora loved the seasonal changes in the St. Clair River. She continued with her French lessons, traveled to Asia and the Caribbean, enjoyed membership in the St. Clair Study Group, and well into her seventies, was a dedicated volunteer “Friendly Visitor” for the Victorian Order of Nurses. In 2010, Nora and Don moved to Midland, Ontario to be closer to their grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hillcrest Village Care Centre for their care and compassion.

Family and friends are invited to join in a celebration of Nora’s life at Carson Funeral Home, J. H. Lynn Chapel, 290 First Street, Midland, Ontario, (705-526-6551) on Monday, January 2^nd, 2017. (Visitation at 1 PM, Service at 2 PM, reception to follow.) Internment will be held in the spring in Midland, Ontario. If desired, donations in Nora’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
