Remembering Alger Walter Martin 'Al'

Born Jun 21, 1919 in Foxmead, Ontario and passed away peacefully at Mill Creek Long Term Care Facility in Barrie on October 31, 2015 at the age of 96. Cherished husband of Lois (Justin) Martin for 68 years and father of Jill (Casey) Van Kessel of Barrie and Judy (Bill) Jackson of Victoria, B.C. Dear grandfather of Perry Van Kessel and Karla (Antonio) Frederick, Krista (Barry) Jackson and Matthew Jackson. Loved great grandpa of Carter, Chris and Cayden Van Kessel and Avery and Aryn Frederick. Survived by his sister Betty Balkwill and predeceased by brothers Elmer, Lawrence and Royce Martin and sisters Elsie Todoroff, Grace Glenn (formerly Readman) and Joan Crissinger. Al served with the Royal Canadian Engineers during WWII and was a long time employee at Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia. He and Lois travelled extensively and after retirement they spent many enjoyable winters in Florida. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his quiet wit and ready smile. The world seems somehow diminished by his passing. The family wished to express their sincere gratitude to the amazing staff at Mill Creek for their compassionate and personal efforts during Al’s five years in their care and especially during the last few difficult months. The family will receive friends at the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia, (705) 326-3595 on Wednesday November 4, 2015 from 6 – 8:30 P.M. and again on Thursday November 5, 2015 from 1 P.M. until commencement of the funeral service at 2 o’clock. Interment will take place at St. Andrew’s St. James’ Cemetery in Orillia followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Al would be appreciated to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
